Playing in the well-funded and high-exposure sporting environment of American colleges might be an aspiration of many Canadian student athletes, but they'll need to jump several bureaucratic hurdles before getting a shot at their goal.
Colleges and universities south of the border have a reputation for wooing Canadian athletes with lucrative scholarships and sporting arenas that attract large audiences and media attention. But if you're an athlete that dreams of playing your game in this promised land, you'll have to understand how the system works and make sure your academic credentials are up to par.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulates post-secondary sports across the United States. Similar in structure to its Canadian analogue, Canadian Interuniversity Sport, but more bureaucratic in nature due to the sheer number of institutions it organizes.
Each member institution - college or university - is placed into one of three divisions. For students eyeing a solid sports scholarship, knowing the division a school belongs to is the first step.
