If you're an athlete who's excelled in your sport to the point that you find yourself competing internationally, then you could qualify for government funding. Canada's government is actively looking to be more competitive at international games like the Olympics, and they're throwing cash at athletes who can bring success.

The criteria for the Athlete Assistance Program are tough one to meet. You must have "the potential to be in the top 16 in your sport in the world" according to Sports Canada. If you are, then you must make yourself available to a rigorous schedule of training and competition at international events. But the rewards can be great.

You tuition can be deferred entirely, and you are paid a salary from the government. Just recently Canada joined many other countries who bestow cash awards on their Olympic medal winners, with $20,000 for gold, $10,000 for silver, and $5,000 for bronze. All this comes from a portion of Sport Canada's $140 million a year budget.

Athletes are nominated for funding by the National Sports Organization they belong to. These organizations run the gamut from Archery to Yachting. They're your gateway to those government dollars, and will provide the application form to you if you meet the standards.
