Unlocking athletic scholarships in Canada

The prospects of funding for amateur athletes in Canada has raised dramatically in recent years, with universities and colleges realizing that more money is needed to prevent top athletes heading south of the border and the Canadian government placing more value in top-tier competitors.
Gifted high school athletes have long been sucked into the talent funnel that drains from Canada directly into the United States. Lured by hefty scholarships and the chance to play within bigger sporting associations, athletes leaving Canada created a phenomenon coined "brawn drain". Canadian Interuniversity Sport, the governing body for sports in Canada, recently moved to plug the funnel by loosening their strict policies surrounding student funding.
Now Canadian athletes can find more opportunities to have their tuition covered entirely, and scholarships aimed at recruiting athletes are considered ethical. Plus, the growing sports leagues in the college system don't put any restrictions on what funding athletes can receive. At the same time, the federal government is willing to invest more than ever into those elite athletes who compete internationally.
